Michael Freeman, market segment manager, automotive refinish with BASF, was jazzed about some new technologies and customer offerings that his company presented during the NACE/CARS show in Detroit. There was the color matching efforts the company recently completed, to help rematch important colors and assure that BASF was spot on with new colors hitting the market. There also was a renewed emphasis on R-M Onyx HD, which Freeman says is the only refinish coating that can be mixed as a solventborne or waterborne with a single set of toners.

“We’re constantly evolving our products and recently we went through a process to rematch several colors to make sure that we’re hitting all the newest colors coming out,” Freeman told ABRN during a meeting in their booth. “BASF, we’re kind of known for our color matching ability. There are 700 wet match colors that we went through that are very, very popular. We wanted to make sure that these colors are dead on.”

With regard to Onyx HD, Freeman said it allows the painter to adjust his paint mix, depending on the weather conditions or the type of job he’s doing, because it works with solvent or water. “When he’s doing two-toning, when he wants to have the ability to put a tapeline down, you could do that very easily with solventborne. If it’s humid outside, waterborne is notorious for not drying very quickly, “ he said. “We want to help our customers get more cars through the shop, and so that’s where Onyx comes in.”

According to the company, Onyx can be five times faster in certain applications than competitive offerings, with fewer coats needed. Freeman says this translates to improved shop efficiency and savings. “It allows you to have one mixing bank and then have five or six SKUs of reducers and mixing clears, and determine if it’s going to be waterborne or solventborne,” he said.
