3M launches new series of SOPs for aluminum repairs

Oct. 31, 2014
3M Automotive Aftermarket Division has developed a new set of standard operating procedures, along with the products and tools to go with them, to tackle jobs that include high-strength aluminum in an efficient and cost effective way.
With the advent of high-strength aluminum showing up in more cars, repairs have become more challenging. More importantly, there is a lot of confusion and mis-information in the marketplace.

3M Automotive Aftermarket Division has the answer with a new set of standard operating procedures (SOPs) -- along with the products and tools to go with them -- to tackle these jobs in an efficient and cost effective way.  These new SOPs can be found online at http://3mcollision.com/library/sops.

3M’s SOPs help teach basic and advanced skills, demonstrate proper techniques and showcase innovative product solutions.  Designed for car enthusiasts, technical students and automotive professionals, the 3M Standard Operating Procedures provide step-by-step guidance through a range of projects to help ensure repairs are done professionally and efficiently.

The 3M SOPs for aluminum repair cover:

A number of 3M products can be used for high-strength aluminum repairs, including the 3M™ File Belt Sander and 3M™ Panel Bonding Adhesive. The File Belt Sander is used for grinding out self-piercing rivets, removing seam sealer and preparing surfaces for rivet-bonded repairs.  Panel Bonding Adhesive can be used to bond door skins, roof skins, quarter panels and box sides.  Both products were recently approved by Ford for use in repairs on the Ford F150 pickup.
