June 16, 2011 — A national panel of representatives spanning the auto and utilities industries, government agencies and other organizations will meet for the first time June 20-21 in Detroit to work on a roadmap for developing widespread acceptance and deployment of electric vehicles and infrastructure.
So far, 39 public and private organizations have signed on to participate on the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Electric Vehicle Standards Panel (EVSP). ANSI is looking for more to join in the conversation.
“I encourage all interested parties to join with these leading organizations and get involved with the EVSP today,” said S. Joe Bhatia, ANSI president and CEO. “Time is of the essence, and the U.S. standards community must come together to keep up with the fast pace of technological developments. We must also keep up with our trading partners who are accelerating their national and regional standardization initiatives, recognizing the enormous opportunity to grow this emerging industry.”
ANSI decided to form the EVSP in March to build a coordinated approach to keeping pace with electric vehicle initiatives moving forward in other parts of the world. The panel will discuss priorities on such standardization issues as design, performance, safety, testing, certification and training. The group plans to stay up to speed on the advancement of policy issues and enhance the ability of U.S. businesses to compete in global markets.
The EVSP will also work through a public-private partnership to ensure the technology and infrastructure for electric vehicles will be safe and effective.
