Ford to Lay Off 800 Workers by August

Ford workers opened their email on Monday to find a letter from CEO Jim Hackett with an explanation of how many salaried workers would be leaving the auto company this week and why.

May 20, 2019—Ford sent a mass email to employees Monday detailing who would be among the 500 laid off employees this week, reported The Detroit Free Press,

The company will see 500 salaried workers in the U.S. leave involuntarily this week, and 800 in the U.S. by August. By the end of August, Ford projects to see 7,000 voluntary and involuntary separations globally.

The letter to employees was titled, "Smart Redesign Update." Notifications to employees will begin May 21 and the majority will be completed May 24. 

By the end of the process later in August, Ford will have eliminated about 7,000 salaried positions or about 10% of its global salaried workforce.
