August 6, 2018—The Kiefer Foundation approaches its 2-year anniversary with new initiatives to end distracted driving and its related injuries and death, reported The Detroit Free Press.
Steve Kiefer, General Motors executive, founded the Kiefer Foundation in October 2016 to honor his son, Michael Kiefer, who had died in a car accident involving a distracted driver, according to the report.
Some of the foundation's upcoming initiatives include erecting more cable guard rails along the stretch of highway where Michael died, using NHL hockey players and hockey to raise awareness of distracted driving and offering scholarships to people with solutions to end distracted driving.
About 40,000 people each year are killed on the highways in the United States, and about 10 percent of those deaths are caused by distracted driving, said Kiefer, reported The Detroit Free Press. That means 10 people a day every day are killed by a distracted driver.
On August 11, the foundation will hold its second annual Play with Purpose Charity Hockey Game at USA Hockey rink in Plymouth. Kiefer told The Detroit Free Press that the event was more about raising awareness than raising money.
