Visteon provides technology for crash avoidance development

Oct. 4, 2012—Global automotive supplier Visteon Corp. is providing vehicle-to-vehicle communications equipment for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Safety Pilot program.

The DOT’s Safety Pilot program, which launched in August, is a project meant to improve driver awareness through the development of collision, hazardous road and curve speed warnings, as well as traffic flow information, in vehicles.

Visteon said the Safety Pilot program is lead by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute. The Institute will integrate Visteon’s dedicated short-range communication devices in more than 2,800 vehicles to test their ability to wirelessly communicate from vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure.

The test vehicles will continuously receive location and status information, such as speed and projected path, from other nearby test vehicles, Visteon said. In addition, vehicles will communicate with roadside units built into the infrastructure of highways and intersections.

"We're excited to be involved with such a significant technology development that has the ability to advance connectivity and safety well beyond existing systems.”
