Citing superior tire quality and delivery service, the U.S. military’s Defense Supply Center in Columbus, Ohio (DSCC) has saluted Michelin’s truck and aircraft tire divisions with coveted silver supplier performance honors.

Michelin Americas Truck Tires and Michelin Aircraft Tire Co. were awarded silver Best Value Medals on Aug. 26.

“This award reflects many months of coordinated effort by Michelin’s military tire team, as well as our logistics subcontractor, Science Applications International Corp.,” reports Jim Griese, director of North American military products for the company’s truck tire unit.

“We realize the critical nature of supplying parts for U.S. military operations around the world, and we hope this award further validates DSCC’s selection of Michelin for its Ground Tire Privatization Initiative contract last year,” he says.

Since winning the contract, the company’s truck tire division has processed nearly 38,000 orders and delivered more than 352,000 tires to 1,400 locations worldwide. The company manages an inventory of more than 330 line items produced by Michelin and other major tire manufacturers and consistently meets or exceeds the standard established by the DSCC for on-time deliveries, Griese notes.

Michelin is one of 89 firms among the DSCC’s 8,200 suppliers to receive a Best Value Medal. The honor is awarded to companies that have demonstrated “exceptional quality and delivery performance” as measured by the Automated Best Value System (ABVS). The ABVS is a computerized system that collects a vendor’s past performance data and translates it into a numeric score ranging from zero to a perfect 100.

To be eligible to receive an ABVS award, a supplier must have shipped 50 or more contract line items for the DSCC during a 12-month rating period. To qualify for a gold medal, a supplier must have a perfect score of 100. A score of 99 through 99.9 earned silver, and those with scores ranging from a 98 through 98.9 were awarded bronze medals.

Currently delivering about 80,000 military aircraft tires per year to the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army, Michelin is averaging about three days to deliver tires anywhere in the world, including the current theatres of operation, with close to a 99 percent on-time record.

“We appreciate the U.S. government putting its trust in Michelin, along with our partner Lockheed Martin MS2, to get the right aircraft tires to our men and women in the armed services while they concentrate on their mission at hand,” says Brett Carnes, director of North American military sales for Michelin Aircraft Tires. “It is an honor to be awarded the Silver Best Value Medal.”
