A flashing 4WD indicator lamp and/or DTC 33 may be caused by corroded transfer case shift position switches. The bulletin includes  an illustration and part numbers for all five transfer case switches. Bulletin 02-23-007back1996, All Models A recall notice has been issued for all 1996 models to address an emissions inspection failure. Many states’ emissions inspections include a check of the OBD II system pass/fail determination. On some early-production 1996 vehicles, the MIL status may be commanded ON, but the MIL will not illuminate. If the MIL bulb illuminates when the ignition is first turned on (bulb check) but not when commanded on by the PCM, the PCM is faulty and should be replaced. The bulletin includes a list of VINs and matching PCM replacement-part numbers. It also includes instructions for determining MIL status using the  MUT-II scan tool. Bulletin EMR-02-001back1999-2003 Montero Sport with A/T MIL illumination with DTC P0500 or problems with the speedometer may be caused by a worn vehicle speed sensor drive gear.
