A safety recall has been issued to repair/replace a leaking transfer case.
Undetected oil leaks can cause sudden transfer case failure, which could cause
the drive wheels to lock up while the car is being driven. A reseal kit is
available, and the bulletin includes additional part numbers, illustrations and
complete inspection/repair procedures. Owners are being notified by mail, but
only the dealer can determine which VINs are covered under the warranty.
Bulletin SR-02-003back
2001-02 Montero
A flashing 4WD indicator lamp and/or DTC 33 may be caused by corroded transfer
case shift position switches. The original switches are susceptible to water
damage, and new revised switches are available to prevent the problem. The
bulletin includes
an illustration and part numbers for all five transfer case switches.
Bulletin 02-23-007back1996,
All Models
A recall notice has been issued for all 1996 models to address an emissions
inspection failure. Many states’ emissions inspections include a check of the
OBD II system pass/fail determination. On some early-production 1996 vehicles,
the MIL status may be commanded ON, but the MIL will not illuminate. If the MIL
bulb illuminates when the ignition is first turned on (bulb check) but not when
commanded on by the PCM, the PCM is faulty and should be replaced. The bulletin
includes a list of VINs and matching PCM replacement-part numbers. It also
includes instructions for determining MIL status using the
MUT-II scan tool.
Bulletin EMR-02-001back1999-2003
Montero Sport with A/T
MIL illumination with DTC P0500 or problems with the speedometer may be caused
by a worn vehicle speed sensor drive gear. A new steel gear is available to
replace the original plastic gear, mounted in the rear transmission housing. Two
different parts are available, depending on whether the original gear has 25 or
26 teeth. The dealer parts department will need the VIN to provide the correct
part.
Bulletin 03-23-022back2000-03 Eclipse with V6 engine, except GTS
Hard starting or rough idle when hot and/or DTC P0300 through P0306 may be
caused by PCM programming. A new Hot Soak Restart PCM calibration and a new
thermostat are available to repair the problem. The bulletin includes
calibration ROM numbers indexed by PCM part number, along with instructions for
obtaining the PCM number using the MUT-II scan tool. This bulletin does not
apply to Eclipse GTS with variable induction.
Bulletin 03-13-002back2001-02
Montero
MIL illumination with DTC P0125 may be caused by faulty PCM programming. If
there are no driveability or other concerns, the PCM can be reprogrammed to
eliminate the problem. On 2001 models, all four oxygen sensors must also be
replaced after reprogramming. The bulletin includes complete programming
instructions for use with the MUT-II scan tool.
