Michelin will be supplying the new Airbus A350 XWB jetliner
with its Air X NZG (Near Zero Growth) radial tires.
“Airbus reached the decision following a rigorous selection
process that recognized the properties of Michelin’s NZG
technology tires and the quality of its organization,” the
tire maker reports. “To satisfy the demands of Airbus and
the two companies’ common customers, Michelin had to respond
to a number of challenges, including fast time to market,
maturity at first test flight, lower aircraft operating
costs and a smaller environmental footprint.”
Weighing about 20 percent less than tires made using
conventional technology, the Air X NZGs make the aircraft
more fuel efficient while lowering its environmental impact,
according to the company. In addition to reducing the weight
of the new European wide-body jetliner, the tires present
“superior robustness in operation.”
Michelin has been an Airbus supplier since 1983. Having
equipped all of the Airbus civil aircraft, from the A300 to
the A380, the company says it is “already preparing for the
next generation of long-haul jetliners.”
