Yokohama-equipped racers took the overall win and earned three first-place finishes at the recent Redline Time Attack event at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif. The drivers scored the victories on the company’s Advan A005 and Neova AD08 tires.
The series, which features purpose-built 600-horsepower race cars and highly tuned street-legal vehicles, awards points and declares winners based on which driver achieves the fastest lap time.
In addition to taking the overall win with the fastest time of the weekend (1:39.730), Brian Lock won the Super Modified AWD Class driving the Cobb Tuning Nissan GT-R on A005 slicks.
In the Super Modified FWD Class, Jason Saini, also using the A005s, took the class win in the Tri Point Motorsports Mazda3 with a time of 1:46.233.
Driving the Evasive Motorsports Honda Civic, Michael Chang won the Fontana Nissan Enthusiasts FWD Class using AD08 tires in 2:00.395.
“I was extremely pleased with the tires,” notes Lock, who says he shaved off three seconds by switching to Yokohama’s tires.
“What really impressed me with the tires, besides the speed and performance, was the temperature control,” he continues. “We were able to run three to four laps at a time when the track temperature was 95 degrees. We’ll be using the same tires to try and break the track record when we come back to Auto Club Speedway in November.”
“We had first place wins in every category where we had tires running,” says Sam Kwa, Yokohama motorsports technical engineer. “Cobb Tuning did a great job. The amazing thing is all they did was switch from tires that are legal in modified class over to the A005 slicks and dropped their lap time by almost three seconds,” he reports.
“This shows that tires are the most important aspect of the race car; everything has to work in synergy with the tires to produce an effective package,” according to Kwa. “Those teams that recognize this will have an edge over their competitors.”
