New recycled rubber tire compound moves from the lab to tire production process
Rubber recycler Magnum D’Or Resources, Inc. of Quebec and Colorado, in conjuction with SRI Corp., is reporting that a light truck tire made from the new Magnum/SRI “Next Generation Revolutionary Custom Compound” has successfully been produced.
“This is a truly significant and historic development, as for the first time there is a technology that is going to consume recycled material in value-added applications and in volumes that will really make a difference to the annual accumulation of over 2 billion tires,” says Gopi Sekhar, SRI’s CEO.
“This success has been achieved by thinking out of the box coupled with a great deal of hard work, diligence and a great deal of support from our partnership with Magnum,” he points out.
“We have for some time now been carrying out trials in laboratory scale, converting our activated compound into a ‘custom compound’ tailored for blending with various high end applications. We have now successfully produced the custom compound in full commercial production scale,” Sekhar adds.
An undisclosed tire manufacturer’s production unit was able to blend the material with its virgin light truck tire compound in several batches in a process matching normal OEM tire production.
“The tires were put under the most stringent in-house tests and passed with flying colors, matching the original tires’ technical and performance parameters,” Sekhar reports.
“I have no doubt that once our compounds are readily available to tire manufactures, an explosive growth will follow,” he says, noting that moving the process from the laboratory to a commercially applicable technology is a significant achievement for the rubber recycling industry. In addition, tire makers will garner significant savings in the cost of raw materials if recycled tires are added to the manufacturing mix, Sekhar notes.
