July 29, 2013—The BMW Group debuted the series version of its electric vehicle, the BMW i3, simultaneously in New York, London and Beijing on Monday.

The car is the BMW Group’s first pure electric series-produced model and achieves a range of about 80–100 miles on a single charge. The BMW i3 is also available with a range-extender that uses a two-cylinder gasoline engine adjacent to the electric motor that extends the car’s maximum range to around 185 miles.

“It is purpose-built around an electric power train to serve the needs of our megacity customers," said Norbert Reithofer, chairman of the board of management of BMW AG.

The four-passenger, lightweight BMW i3 has more than 90,000 test-drive requests.

The i3 will be release_notesd in Germany and other European markets in November 2013 and the market launch in the U.S., China, Japan and several other markets will take place in the first half of 2014.
