LKQ Corporation, an auto and truck recycler, recently completed its Get Green promotion.
LKQ partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation, whose Replanting Our Nation’s Forests program works to replace trees lost to fires, insects, and disease across the United States. The Get Green promotion will result in the planting of more than 10,000 trees. Each year, these trees will be able to absorb 240 tons of carbon dioxide and will produce 160 tons of oxygen, enough to keep 720 people breathing for a year.
“We wanted to do something that directly benefits the environment, and working with the Arbor Day Foundation is a great way to do that,” says Laurie Garcia, LKQ Vice President. Anyone who visited the Get Green website between April 22 and June 30, 2010 and entered a valid e-mail address received one tree planted in their honor, with the option to have additional trees planted.
“LKQ recycles hundreds of thousands of vehicles each year, and this year we wanted to do something to go above and beyond our typical green business practices to further help the communities in which we do business,” Garcia adds.
Through its operations last year, LKQ helped to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 890,000 tons, an amount that would require a mixed forest of about 148,333 acres to absorb.
“Even though the Get Green promotion is over,” says Garcia, “we will continue our efforts to help the environment on a daily basis because that is what being an auto and truck recycler is all about.”
