Mazda has always built drivers' cars, and this minivan is no exception. Based on the fifth-generation 626 platform, it's smaller and lighter than other minivans, but the windows roll down on both rear doors. The MPV had a major facelift in 2002, which included punching out the 2.5L Ford Duratec engine to three liters.

Another facelift came in 2004, but mechanical changes were minimal. Some models were available with rear heating and air conditioning. With that option, coolant capacity is 12.7 quarts (12.0L) and refrigerant capacity is 28.2 ounces (800 g). The cooling system has an unusual feature: the water pump is on the flywheel end of the engine, and the left intake camshaft drives the belt. All other belt-driven accessories are on the front, and each belt has an auto tensioner. When checking fuel pressure with a scan tool, the reading may be higher than specified here. In fact, different information sources show different fuel pressure specs, so it's hard to know which is correct.

There are a few important service bulletins. MIL illumination with P0401 might be repaired by reprogramming the PCM. If the key can't be removed from the ignition lock, the gear selector lever may be damaged. A faulty transmission range (TR) switch might cause the O/D OFF light and/or the MIL to illuminate with code P0706. If the power sliding door opens after starting to latch, check the adjustment of the rubber bumpers on the door. Engine stalling may be due to PCM software leaning the fuel mixture too much.
