EPA: Repair shop regulation deadline coming with the new year

Sept. 21, 2010

September 21, 2010—For collision repair shops that have yet to register an initial notification with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to be in compliance with the National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants, the deadline is Jan. 10, 2011, and full compliance status in the shop must be met by March 11, 2011.

Collision repair shots were required to file an initial notification with the EPA and/or with their state by Jan. 11, 2010, according to an ASA press release_notes.

The rules set in 2008 apply to small emitting sources, such as shops that use paint stripping or surface coating that emit less than 10 tons per year of a toxic air pollutant or less than 25 tons per year of multiple air pollutants.

Shops with paint stripping operations should minimize evaporative loss of MeCl by reducing consumption of MeCl and apply new equipment that would do so.

Shops with surface coating operations should minimize the amount of coating required and capture toxic metals from the coating process by using spray booths, high volume low pressure equipment and cleaning spray guns manually or in an enclosed washer.
