Team Toyo’s most recent recruit, Ian Baker, is off to a running start after taking the checkered flag in the STS (Street Touring Sport) class during the SCCA ProSolo event in Washington, D.C. this past weekend.
Baker’s 1989 Honda CRX Si was on the go with Proxes R1R extreme performance tires.
Besting a field of eight cars, he won by a cumulative margin of nearly 1.8 seconds over the second-place finisher.
“D.C. was a hot weekend,” says Baker, “so tire management was critical, especially with four back-to-back runs. With areas of the course covered by newly laid down sealant, my primary focus was on keeping the tires from overheating and making sure the car transitioned well on and off the sealant.”
He recounts how “everyone was struggling for grip on the sealant, but the stable footprint from the R1Rs made the car easy to handle, even in low grip. That same stable footprint also allowed me to concentrate on a fast line over several large bumps, which sent several cars airborne, without having to adjust to regain grip.”
“Ian is the newest member of Team Toyo,” observes Stan Chen, manager of events and motorsports, “and he is immediately demonstrating his race-winning talent while adding another win for the Proxes R1R.”
