WASHINGTON, D.C. — Oklahoma state House Bill 1584, the Motor Vehicle Owners’ Right to Repair Act introduced and assigned to the House Rules Committee Feb. 6, 2007, has died in the Oklahoma legislature. It failed to move through the committee process and did not reach the House for a vote during this session.

Oklahoma’s H.B. 1584 would have regulated how automotive service information is provided and would have made a state government agency responsible for administering automotive service information and establishing monetary penalties and legal remedies.

The Automotive Service Association (ASA) says such legislation would interfere with the voluntary, industry-supported service information process already in place that protects independent repairers and consumers. Specifically, the National Automotive Service Task Force (NASTF) already accommodates for the identification and correction of gaps involved in the access of automotive service information, diagnostic tools and equipment, and training. In addition to third-party providers, independent repairers have access to automaker Web sites to obtain service information.

Oklahoma now joins Florida as a state unable to move forward with proposed Right to Repair legislation. To learn more visit ASA’s legislative Web site, www.TakingTheHill.com.
