Leaf, Volt, Prius top Kelley Blue Book list of greenest cars

April 19, 2011

April 19, 2011 — With Earth Day coming up April 22, Kelley Blue Book’s Kbb.com has release_notesd a list of the 10 greenest vehicles on the market this year.

At the top of the list are the Nissan Leaf, followed by the Chevy Volt and the Toyota Prius. The rest of the list, from top to bottom, includes the Lexus CT 200h, Honda Insight, Ford Fusion Hybrid, Volkswagen Golf TDI, Hyundai Elantra, 2012 Fiat 500 and 2012 Ford Focus.

The Kbb.com editors looked beyond fuel efficiency in their rankings, also considering safety, creature comforts and driving enjoyment. Minimum requirements included fuel economy and carbon dioxide emissions superior to most vehicles in the same class.

“The sheer number and types of choices in the Green Cars category have grown remarkably in the last year, with new plug-in electrically driven vehicles alongside an increased number of traditional gasoline-powered cars with improved fuel economy, as well as hybrids and diesels,” said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kbb.com. “Whether drivers are looking to be more environmentally friendly or seeking to save cash at the gas pump or both, the latest Top 10 Green Cars list from Kbb.com offers a variety of choices to suit drivers’ various green car wants and needs.”

Though hybrid and electric vehicles are growing in popularity, the Kkb.com editors found that some gas-powered vehicles are offering fuel efficiencies close to 40 miles per gallon. That, combined with their lower cost compared to some hybrids, should make them popular, the editors said.
