When evaluating the value of a power tool, many people view torque as the most important factor. Although torque contributes to a tool’s ability to get the job done, it is key for technicians to understand deviations in torque measurement as well as other major factors that contribute to a tool’s worth, like durability and reliability. Technicians will save time and effort in the shop when they take the time to decipher which tools are right for the task at hand.

While torque is an important component of the power of an impact tool, inconsistences in torque measurement can lead to problems on the job if technicians don’t have the torque they need for the task. Torque ratings can be confusing because there is no industry standard regulating torque measurement and testing. There are many variables in torque testing that can lead to inconsistencies across manufacturers, including the set time, bolt size and air pressure used. Maximum reverse torque is the torque developed after 10 seconds of run time. Nut-busting torque specifically applies to loosening a fastener and is the highest torque achieved when removing a fastener in under 10 seconds. Both ratings are developed from running multiple, precisely-timed tests under consistent and controlled conditions to attain the best repeatability possible. Technicians put different demands on their tools, so it’s up to each individual to determine which rating is more meaningful in his work environment.

Torque is important, and it gets a lot of attention in the tool buying process, but torque isn’t everything. Durability, reliability, control and comfort are factors technicians should also consider when buying a tool.
