But sometimes it's more about telling people what you want, not how to do it. F. John Reh, management contributor to About.com, says business owners will find their employees to be more responsive to guidance, not instructions. It also can lead to more innovation and initiative on the employees' parts.

Perhaps the best way to encourage your employees is to take a little bit of both and suggest ways for your employees to learn and better themselves, and your shop.
