Fleet owners: A crash course on accident prevention

New technology helps prevent accidents and vehicle downtime.

Whether your fleet vehicles are used for hot-shot local deliveries or they are transporting large orders halfway across the country, having to pay for the repair of a vehicle involved in an accident is a costly expense. Not only are you left with enormous repair bills and insurance headaches, but vehicle downtime costs you too. Now there is technology that enables you to prevent collisions by recording driving incidents and providing drivers with unbiased feedback on their behind-the-wheel habits.

DriveCam Video Systems, a developer of fleet safety technology, has a system that may prove useful to distributors and jobbers with fleet vehicles. This palm-sized video recorder is mounted to a vehicle’s windshield. Recording what drivers see and hear during unusual driving incidents into a digital looping memory, DriveCam monitors driving activity by continuously recording video and audio, as well as four directions of G-forces, which are caused by hard braking, acceleration, harsh cornering or collisions. Additional software, called HindSight 20/20, allows fleet managers to easily view a driving event on a computer so they can evaluate the driver’s performance.

“DriveCam’s Driving Feedback System is used by commercial fleets to promote driving safety, security and accountability,” says Ed Andrew, president of DriveCam Video. “Safe driving translates to fewer collisions, which lowers insurance losses. At the same time, safe driving reduces vehicle wear and tear and lowers vehicle operating costs.”
