May 23, 2016—3M introduced two new products to address increasing government regulations around indoor air quality in passenger vehicles and more strict automotive OEM standards. The new tapes have a low volatile organic compound (VOC) makeup.

The new 3M Low VOC Scrim Reinforced Adhesive Transfer Tape 98010LVC and 3M Double Coated Tissue Tape 99015LVC provide bonding capabilities for a variety of surfaces found in vehicle interiors.

The tapes are optimized for interior surfaces such as door bolsters and pillars, headliners, seats, instrument panels, ventilation ducts, armrests and center consoles.

“As we look to expand our reach to automotive OEM’s, tier suppliers and our converter partners, we discovered an opportunity to develop a new line of innovative, low emission, thin attachment tapes,” Chad Henke, global business development manager, 3MTM Industrial Adhesives & Tapes Division, said. “Our global experience and partnerships across the automotive value chain will enable design engineers to focus on the fit and finish of the interior, instead of the emission contents of their components.”

The tapes were created to meet target values for nine substances with defined limits for vehicle indoor air quality measured by The Japanese Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) as well as the requirements for The German Association of Automotive Industry’s test method, VDA 278, by chich VOC and FOG total emissions are measured.
