Clothing donations to this season’s “Treads For Threads” campaign being conducted in Colorado by Big O Tires are 40 percent below last year’s levels.
Some 15,700 people in the state – many of them children – do not have adequate winter duds to cope with Colorado’s harsh climate, reports company spokeswoman Lori Jones.
“Now is the time to clear out those closets, and start the year off fresh,” she says, requesting contributions of gently worn coats, hats, gloves, sweaters, boots, socks, thermals and scarves to any of the 45 Big O locations across the Front Range and Northern Colorado along with outlets in Pueblo and Colorado Springs.
Donated items are to be distributed for free on Jan. 18 to Colorado’s less fortunate through ARC Thrift Stores and the Volunteer’s of America.
According to the National Alliance to end Homelessness, the state has more than 14,000 residents who are considered homeless; that figure is expected to rise by about 1,700 this year because of current economic conditions.
