Inc. magazine has named American Tire Distributors, Inc. (ATD) to its 2009 list of the 5,000 fastest-growing private companies in America.
ATD ranked No. 13 on the list by revenues, and No. 25 on the list in terms of gross dollars of growth. The company posted revenues of nearly $2 billion in 2008, up 30.3 percent over the three-year period covered by the Inc. analysis.
The monthly publication “is dedicated to helping the owners and managers of fast-growing private companies, providing advice on management, technology, finance and marketing as well as insight from successful entrepreneurs,” reports magazine spokesman Rod Kurtz.
“It’s a great honor to be included in the Inc. 5000 ranking and a tribute to our 2,200 employees nationwide who have worked so hard to make ATD an effective partner to the thousands of locally owned tire dealers we are proud to call our customers,” says William E. “Bill” Berry, ATD’s CEO and president. “We succeed when our dealers succeed, and that’s why we’re working harder than ever to ensure ATD has the products and programs our customers need.”
Following a decade of acquisitions and increasing market share, ATD currently supplies roughly 10 percent of all replacement tires sold in the U.S., according to Berry.
The revenue growth numbers used in the Inc. rankings do not reflect December’s acquisition of Am-Pac Tire Dist., Inc., “which improved ATD’s ability to serve dealers in some existing markets and also expanded ATD’s geographic footprint to important new markets including St. Louis and western Texas,” Berry explains. Am-Pac recorded revenues of $264.5 million during fiscal-year 2008.
Through its network of 82 distribution centers servicing all or part of 37 states, ATD currently supplies more than 40,000 products, including tires, custom wheels and related merchandise to more than 35,000 customers. “In addition to offering an unmatched breadth and depth of products that independent dealers could not provide to their customers on a stand-alone basis, ATD also provides sales and marketing support services that allow locally owned dealers to compete effectively in their markets,” Berry notes.
Based in Huntersville, N.C., the company employs 2,200-plus workers across its nationwide distribution center network, including more than 300 people in the Charlotte region at its Huntersville field support center, Charlotte distribution center and regional hub in Maiden, N.C.
ATD was established in 1935 as the J.H. Heafner Co. with a single tire store in Lincolnton, N.C. It adopted the American Tire Distributors moniker in 2002 amid a series of ongoing acquisitions. In addition to a 270,000-sq. ft. national warehouse, the firm has 82 regional warehouses encompassing more than 4.5 million sq. ft. The motor pool includes more than 900 delivery vehicles.
