Dec. 31, 2012—3M Automotive Aftermarket recently introduced a new tool to help auto body technicians remove spot welds from high-strength automotive panels.
3M said traditional methods of using specialized drill bits to separate panels during disassembly can be time-consuming, expensive and challenging for technicians. Spot weld removal is getting more difficult as automakers use more high-strength steel in designs. 3M said its new tool, the Green Corps File Belt, is an alternative to drilling that offers an abrasive surface designed for spot weld removal and grinding in tight areas.
3M said one Green Corps File Belt is able to grind more spot welds than a drill bit, and can be used on all types of steel.
“Our technical experts have been studying the changes in vehicle disassembly and the challenges presented by high-strength steel. We are introducing the 3M Green Corps File Belt to provide a new solution that will help body shop technicians disassemble vehicles with all types of materials more quickly and efficiently,” said Randy Ralston, marketing manager for the abrasives segment of 3M’s Automotive Aftermarket Division.
