Ford to triple production capacity of electrified vehicles in North America by 2013

June 9, 2011

June 9, 2011 — Ford Motor Company on Thursday announced plans to triple North American production capacity of its electrified vehicle lineup by 2013, growing from roughly 35,000 vehicles a year to 100,000.

“Customers have come to expect fuel efficiency with every new vehicle Ford delivers today, and now we are further differentiating our electrified vehicle lineup with something else people truly value—choice,” said Jim Farley, Ford’s group vice president of marketing, sales and service. “Whether people want a hybrid, a plug-in hybrid or full battery electric vehicle, we have a family of vehicles for them to consider, providing a range of options to best meet their needs and support their driving habits and lifestyles.”

Ford is electrifying vehicle platforms rather than single vehicles. It’s Fusion and Escape hybrids have led its electrified production numbers. Newer offerings including C-MAX Hybrids and C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrids—which will start being produced next year—will aid production growth. Other models in the lineup include the Transit Connect Electric and the Focus Electric.

Both the C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi will be built alongside the new 2012 Focus and Focus Electric at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne. The plant is the first in the world to produce gas, hybrid and electric vehicles under one roof. One of the largest solar energy generator systems in the state helps power the plant.
