The "transfer case" is really just a computer-controlled clutch on the rear differential input shaft, and at low speeds, a switch can be used to lock the front/rear torque split at 50/50. The short-skirt V6 engine described here is thoroughly conventional, with fixed cam timing, but the exhaust cams are chain-driven off the belt-driven intake cams.

The timing belt also drives the water pump. Hyundai used two different A/C compressors with two different oil requirements: the 10PA15C compressor holds 4.4 ounces (130cc), while the 10PA17C compressor holds 6.9 ounces (205cc).

The maintenance schedule calls for replacing the EVAP filter. It also requires changing the fuel filter at 50,000 miles, but that filter is part of the pump assembly. Fortunately, the assembly can be removed through an access panel under the rear seat.

A service bulletin describes MIL illumination with transmission codes that might be caused by damaged wiring or poor ground connections. There's also a bulletin addressing harsh automatic transmission shifts. A service campaign was launched to reprogram the stability control system on 2005-06 models, and several recalls were issued to replace driver side airbags that are deemed too powerful for smaller drivers. The tire pressure warning light can be triggered by powerful radio transmissions, and the ABS self-test at the beginning of each drive cycle tends to be noisy.

This vehicle is covered under Hyundai's 10-year/100,000-mile warranty, so if it happens to show up in your bay for light maintenance, don't miss the opportunity to make a new customer.
