IF YOUR BUSINESS is rolling along, cars moving in and out of the bays, how do you know if it's time to hire more technicians or an additional service advisor? The Better Business Bureau offers tips not only for addressing the issue of hiring, but some guidelines on how to start the process (especially if it's been a while since you added to your workforce).
First, if you feel that you or your employees are sincerely overworked (perhaps due to increased business!), then it's time to consider bringing in more staff. Also, with the increase of hybrids on the roads, perhaps it's time to look into a technician with specialized skills. On the service advisor side, if your customer service could use a jumpstart, maybe it's time to hire more advisors.
Once you determine it's time to hire someone new, define the job and set a competitive salary, the BBB suggests. When the interviews roll around, start by phone screening candidates to make sure only the qualified ones come into your shop for an in-person interview.
During that interview, be organized and consistent, act professional and listen to the person you're interviewing. After all, you'll want that person, should you hire him or her, to be comfortable in coming to you as an employee.
