Odyne Corporation, which develops plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) technology, recently announced that an order has been received from the town of Huntington, N.Y., to install Odyne’s PHEV Technology into two of the city's existing refuse collection vehicles. This is the first and second of three installations authorized by a resolution of the Huntington Town Board. This project is being funded in part by the Greater Long Island Clean Cities Coalition (GLICCC) in its effort to reduce petroleum use and harmful emissions on Long Island. Town of Huntington Supervisor, Frank Petrone states, “We are pleased to facilitate such a beneficial initiative for the Town of Huntington. I hope this is the start of a technology based environmental trend; it would be incredibly beneficial for Long Island, and NY as a whole. We challenge other municipalities to follow Huntington’s lead.” “We believe that installing our systems in existing vehicles is a way for our customers to obtain the benefits of using plug-in hybrid technology without waiting for the replacement cycles of their existing vehicles to give them the opportunity to upgrade their fleets,” says Alan Tannenbaum, CEO of Odyne Corporation. Odyne’s PHEV powertrain and battery control technology enables buses and trucks to operate more efficiently. By plugging the vehicle into the grid, which may be done at low-cost, off-peak hours, the operator substitutes electricity for more expensive vehicle fuel, displacing the imported oil used in diesel or gasoline powered vehicles, and reduces emissions; the hybrid technology provides increased fuel efficiency, and lower maintenance expenses, according to the company.
