FRANKFURT, GERMANY (Sept. 1, 2007) - Peugeot will premiere its diesel-hybrid 308HDi at the Frankfurt Motor Show this week. The automaker says the 308HDi emits less than 90 g/km of carbon dioxide (CO2) and reduces fuel consumption by 58 percent, as measured by
Europe's NEDC Urban Drive Cycle standard, which translates to 69 mpg U.S.. Peugeot says that the demonstration represents another step on the path toward the planned commercialization of this technology in 2010.
The automaker believes that the choice of a diesel engine, rather than a gasoline engine, is the best option to optimize fuel consumption and emissions. Employing a parallel hybrid powerplant - an 80 kW (107 hp) 1.6L HDi DPFS diesel engine in conjunction with a 16 kW continuous electric motor, a 200V, 5.5 Ah NiMH battery pack provides energy storage, and is recharged by regenerative braking.

are the best powertrain option for the near future. The hybrid version, however, delivers better acceleration, city and highway, as the diesel engine. During in-gear acceleration, the diesel engine is reinforced by 23
kW and 96 ft-lbs of additional torque supplied by the electric motor. In addition, the new hybrid is equipped with a 6-speed, electronically controlled manual gearbox that is able to operate in either automatic or manual modes.

Drivers will be able to monitor battery charge status and control all powertrain operating modes, using the vehicle's cockpit color multifunction display. In addition, a special switch allows the driver to select an all-electric zero-emission vehicle operation mode, wherein the diesel engine is then restricted to operating only in more pronounced acceleration phases or high-speed driving.
The vehicle's aerodynamic profile and use of Michelin Energy Saver low-rolling resistance tires further enhance its performance. To achieve a competitive purchase price, Peugeot is using as many components as possible from current Peugeot vehicles - thus reducing the number of specific parts normally associated with hybridization.
