This is the first year for the current-generation Accord. Updates include the addition of throttle-by-wire in 2006, but the maintenance items covered here haven't changed. The base DX model has different alignment specs, and the front axle nut torque on all models with the 2.4L engine and automatic transmission is 134 ft.-lbs. (181Nm); on all others it's 181 ft.-lbs. (245Nm).

One secret to Honda's smooth-shifting manual transmission is its special transmission oil. Regular 10W-40 motor oil can be used to top-off; however, it lacks the friction modifiers and shifting may become stiff. Valve adjustment is with threaded screws.

Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illumination with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0606 is caused by low battery voltage and/or by connecting jumper cables with the ignition switch on.

MIL illumination with P0171 and high short-term fuel trims may be caused by a faulty manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor. With the key off, check to see if the MAP and BARO sensors agree.

There was a recall for P0497 (water in the EVAP canister), and P0420 may be caused by a glitch in the powertrain control module (PCM) programming. Another software glitch can cause faulty mass air flow (MAF) sensor readings on a scan tool even though the MAF may be working correctly.

Loss of reverse after rocking the car while stuck in snow may be cured with a PCM update, and after replacing the throttle body, the PCM may not let the transmission shift out of Park until completing the idle relearn.

Dim headlights and/or P1298 may be caused by a faulty Electronic Load Detector (ELD) in the under-hood fuse/relay box.
