AUBURN HILLS, MI - North American consumers now have a chance to test-drive and purchase the 2007 Volkswagen (VW) Eos convertible. The Eos was introduced to showrooms in September, and a special edition version is expected to be in showrooms this month.
The 2007 VW Eos' interior features dual-zone Climatronic climate control, 12-way power driver's seat adjustments, heated front seats, a trip computer and leather-wrapped steering wheel, brake handle and shift knob.

In addition, the Eos includes standard features such as Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP), safety-optimized front headrests, front airbags and specially developed front/side head-thorax airbags as standard equipment. The 2.0L turbocharged, 200-horsepower, four-cylinder Fuel Stratified Injection (FSI) engine is standard and is paired with a six-speed manual transmission. The Eos 2.0T is EPA-rated at an estimated 23 miles per gallon in the city and 32 mpg in highway driving. Other features include 16-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, fog lights, panoramic sunroof, power windows and cruise control.

The 3.2L narrow angle V6 delivers 250 horsepower and 236 ft.-lbs. of torque. This more powerful Eos comes standard equipped with added wood trim, 17-inch all-season tires, a multifunction steering wheel, rain-sensing wipers and satellite radio.

The 3.2L Eos is equipped with a double-clutch DSG six-speed automatic transmission. The DSG system not only offers the driver the advantage of choosing between full automatic operation or full manual selection, it also changes gears more quickly and smoothly than a conventional transmission, says VW, while improving fuel economy.

Available options include a Dynaudio premium sound system with 10-channel amplifier, 10 speakers and 600-watt output power, bi-Xenon headlights with dynamic and static cornering lights, a DVD navigation system, park distance control and 18-inch alloy wheels.

(Photos: VW)Two vehicles in one The Eos features a coupe-sunroof-convertible (CSC) roof with five panels that transforms the vehicle from a hardtop coupe roof to an integrated sunroof or an open convertible.  The vehicle's panoramic, tinted-glass power sunroof is integrated into the folding roof. The externally guided, tilt-and-slide sunroof with automatic pinch protection gets "sandwiched" between roof panels as the hardtop is lowered.  A switch in the center console activates eight hydraulic cylinders with mechanical linkages. With the press of a switch, the rear decklid opens from its front edge, while the roof panels, including the glass sunroof, split apart and stack atop each other, and the sail panels and rear glass are raised to meet the other roof panels. This sandwich is lowered into the rear of the vehicle, and the decklid is closed.  VW's innovative stacking of roof sections leaves a generous 6.6 cubic feet of storage room in the trunk when the top is down and 10.5-cu.ft. of space available with the top raised.  An optional Trunk Lid Assistance program with integrated bumper sensors monitors up to 20 inches behind the vehicle and prevents the roof from operating if any object or obstruction is detected. A cargo cover preserves the luggage area, and it must be in place and latched for the roof to be lowered. The Eos comes with 24-hour Roadside Assistance for four years with unlimited mileage, and new vehicle warranties including: * Five-year/60,000 mile (whichever occurs first) Powertrain Limited Warranty.

* Four-year/50,000 mile (whichever occurs first) New Vehicle Limited Warranty with wear and tear items and adjustments excluded after the initial 12 months/12,000 miles.

* 12-year unlimited distance Limited Warranty against corrosion perforation.
OEM customized edition A special-edition Eos "Highway 1" model - based on the 3.2L powertrain - goes on sale this October. The Highway 1 model features interior special touches, such as special leather upholstery, piano black lacquer trim and a thick, flat-bottom sport steering wheel. Suspension modifications are also designed to provide an enhanced ride.

The Eos Highway 1 sits about an inch lower than the stock version because of a coil-over suspension system supplied by aftermarket specialist H&R Special Springs. In addition to the more aggressive stance, this Highway 1's suspension is set up to deliver tight, performance-oriented handling.

Derek Jenkins, chief designer at Volkswagen's Santa Monica, CA-based Design Center, says he wanted to strengthen the concept car's sportier stance. The Highway 1 is fitted with 20-by-8-inch Mille Miglia multispoke alloy wheels that are wrapped in low and wide 245/30 Continental performance tires. A final exterior touch is a discreet trunk lid spoiler.
