Recall: Fuel leak possible in post-crash rollover
The Chrysler Group will conduct a voluntary recall of some 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokees for noncompliance of FMVSS 301 relating to the On-Board Refueling Vapor Recovery (ORVR) system, a new requirement for this model year vehicle.
The fuel inlet check valve may cause fuel to spit back, and the evaporative vapor canister may prevent a customer from fueling. An internal test determined that the fuel valve might become detached from the tank in a high-speed rear impact, allowing fuel to leak in the unlikely event of a post-crash rollover. This issue would not occur in a low-speed bumper collision.
The automaker will install a reinforcement bracket to remedy the problem. Technicians should inspect the fuel inlet check valve and replace the fuel tank in the event of a sticking fuel inlet check valve. There have been no reports of accidents or injuries related to this issue.
