Post-secondary vocational training now more important than ever before.

WyoTech, which offers post-secondary vocational training to students and was featured in the July issue of Styling & Performance, has opened its newest campus in Long Beach, California. WyoTech is a division of Corinthian College, Inc., one of the largest post-secondary education companies in the U.S.

WyoTech's new Long Beach campus, formerly known as the National Institute of Technology, now features training in automotive, electrical, and plumbing technology; residential HVAC and medical assistance; and massage therapy. Eventually, the Long Beach campus will also offer the High Performance Power Train Technology (HPTT) course of study.

In early August, WyoTech held a public grand-opening celebration, which featured a car show, celebrities from cable television automotive shows, Formula D Champion Rhys Millen with his "drift" car, campus tours, a career expo, and sponsor displays from many automotive aftermarket companies.

The campus features a nearly 50,000-sq.-ft. automotive facility complete with lifts, tools, and special cutaway cars (called clips) used for training purposes. In addition, the facility features engine, transmission, rear-end, and transaxle training areas.

During the grand-opening celebration, which attracted nearly 300 student prospects, WyoTech featured its NHRA display and contest tent, where contestants tried their skill at two contests. The first involved disassembling a display engine with modified valve covers and cylinder-head bolts (the person with the fastest time was the winner). The second contest had WyoTech students and potential students sitting on a display motorcycle in front of an NHRA Christmas tree starting light that ran a yellow light, yellow light, green light sequence. The person with the fastest reaction time without redlighting (starting too early) won a prize.
WyoTech was founded in 1966 as Wyoming Technical Institute in Laramie, Wyoming. At the time, the college covered just 9,000 square feet. Today, WyoTech is an eight-campus college with more than 1.25 million square feet of space. WyoTech offers courses in automotive technology (which was expanded in 2000 to include chassis fabrication and high-performance engines), diesel technology, collision/refinishing, automotive trim, street-rod building, and customization.
The most recent course addition is the High Performance Power Train (HPPT) course. It was introduced at WyoTech's Blairsville, Pennsylvania campus and then added at the Oakland, California campus. Current plans call for the HPPT course to be available in Laramie in October 2007 and in Long Beach sometime after that. Eventually, WyoTech plans to offer the HPPT course at all campus locations where the automotive technology course is offered.

For employers looking for well-trained vocational graduates, WyoTech offers career fairs four times a year and employers can post job openings with the school. Employers and potential students can contact WyoTech at (888) 577-7559, or log on to www.wyotech.edu.
