Jan. 3, 2012—The Missouri Department of Insurance recently announced it appointed two new insurance regulators as directors of its consumer affairs and market regulation divisions.
Matt Barton was appointed as director of the Missouri Department of Insurance’s consumer affairs division. Barton will be responsible for handling consumer complaints against insurance companies and agents.
Barton, who holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from Lincoln University, has served the Department of Insurance since 2005 as public information officer, manager of the licensing section and regulatory projects manager. Barton has also held leadership roles on committees through the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). He chaired the state-based-systems product steering committee, and currently serves on both the producer licensing and the international regulatory cooperation working groups.
Angela Nelson was appointed as director of the Missouri Department of Insurance’s market regulation division.
Nelson, who holds a bachelor's degree and MBA from William Woods University, has worked for the Department of Insurance since 2002. She most recently served as director of the consumer affairs division.
In addition, Nelson currently serves as chairwoman of the NAIC’s transparency and readability of consumer information working group.
"Both Angela Nelson and Matt Barton have served as invaluable members of our department's leadership team," said John Huff, director of the Missouri Department of Insurance. "As veteran insurance regulators, they will provide outstanding direction for these two divisions, which are key to ensuring consumers are treated fairly and encouraging a competitive insurance marketplace in Missouri."
