March 25, 2016—A U.S. judge Thursday gave Volkswagen until April 21 to reach an agreement for a diesel fix for the automaker’s emissions-beating diesel engines, according to a report from Automotive News.
U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer and lawyers from both the Justice Department and VW said that progress has been made in negotiations, but that a settlement has not been reached yet.
“Volkswagen is committed to resolving the U.S. regulatory investigation into the diesel emissions matter as quickly as possible and to implementing a solution for affected vehicles, as we work to earn back the trust of our customers and dealers and the public," VW said in a statement Thursday.
A central issue in the negotiations is that a full fix for the engines may be impossible. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) may or may not accept a fix that addresses this issue. Earlier in March, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) said the state may allow partially repaired VW diesel cars to continue operating.
Breyer said that he would consider holding a trial on the issue this summer if no deal is reached by April 21.
