Hawaii shop pimps out truck for teen brain cancer patient

May 25, 2011

May 25, 2011 Moved by the story of a teen customer's battle with brain cancer, a Hawaii body shop is supping up the teen's truck for free, and letting him help with the project, according to reports by HawaiiNewsNow.

SIGS Body Shop, based in Honolulu, first heard about Jacob Edralin when Edralin's father brought the teen's 1993 Nissan truck in for repairs. When the shop's co-owner Dan Dutra learned the 16-year-old's battle with brain cancer, he and the other shop employees volunteered to fix up the truck for free and let Edralin help with the repairs.

"If there was one thing that he could look forward to that would be positive in his life, this would be that," Dutra told HawaiiNewsNow. "We're in a situation where, this is what we do, so we can help out."

Edralin, who finished radiation treatment last week, has been helping with tasks like grinding off rust.

"Jacob is mechanically inclined," Dutra told HawaiiNewsNow. "So while he may not know how to work on body work as opposed to just mechanical work, he catches on really quick. Tell him once and he goes with it. I'm impressed."

Edralin told the television station that going to the shop to work on the truck is often the highlight of his day.

"It's like when a planet is being born it's nothing," Edralin said of the truck's progress. "It's just black and dark. Then all of a sudden, there's a big bang and it's just beautiful."
