U.S. Auto Sales Surge in May

 June 4, 2013—May U.S. auto sales achieved an 8 percent gain over a year ago to 1.4 million, according to industry consultant Autodata Corp.

This set the annual sales pace at 15.3 million vehicles for 2013.

All three Detroit automakers reported sales gains in May over the same month last year; Ford Motor Co. said it was up 14 percent, Chrysler Group was up 11 percent, and General Motors (GM) said it was up 3.1 percent.

GM’s Cadillac was the fastest growing brand, with sales up 40 percent

After cutting prices on seven of its models, Nissan Motor Co. said its sales climbed 25 percent.

Toyota, Honda, Hyundai and Kia also reported increases, while Volkswagen said its sales declined 2 percent from a year earlier.

Kelley Blue Book predicted that full-size pickup truck sales were up nearly 20 percent from May 2012.
