June 5, 2019— More than 800 hail damage claims have been filed since Saturday in western Michigan - and that report's from just one insurance company, reported WWMT.
Hail ranging from pea-sized to baseball-sized rained down on Michigan communities as severe thunderstorms moved through the region on June 1. Michigan is not in the top ten for hail claims, which makes the amount somewhat extraordinary, according to the report.
The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, Mich., reported that the hail in Calhoun County was the largest seen since July 4, 2012, when 2.75-inch-diameter hail fell in Mecosta County.
Last year, State Farm reported 280,000 hail claims across the U.S. On average, there are about 3,000 hail storms per year.
