Jan.3, 2018—Even common repairs on a Honda vehicle require a recalibration of its Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), and, so far, only the auto manufacturer’s tool has been approved for the procedure, according to Glass Bytes.

This clarification occurred during a VeriFacts Guild 21 call and PowerPoint presentation. Guild 21 is a group of collision repair industry members who hold monthly calls to share industry-related information.

Honda Sensing, the company’s suite of safety and driver assistive-technologies, utilizes an integrated camera located on the vehicle’s windshield which is responsible for guiding several ADAS features in its makes and models.

According to the company’s presentation, the windshield camera needs to be calibrated under the following circumstances:

  • If the camera has been removed, installed or replaced;
  • If the windshield has been repaired or replaced;
  • If the vehicle’s lane keep assist or adaptive cruise control lights indicate a problem;
  • The vehicle has been in an accident; or
  • The airbag has been deployed.

The presentation also noted that only OEM glass should be used for windshield replacements in its vehicles that are equipped with these cameras.

And when it comes to recalibrating the windshield camera, Honda’s i-HDS (Honda Diagnostic System) scan tool and software is required, according to the presentation.
