W.Va. Drivers Rank First in Chances of Hitting a Deer

October 2, 2018—Drivers in West Virginia have a 1 in 46 chance of striking a deer, reported WVVA. That's the highest such rate in the country and more than double the national average of 1 in 162, according to the report.

The likelihood of hitting a deer in West Virginia is actually down three percent over the previous year. There were 25,176 deer claims reported between July 1, 2017 and June 30, 2018. Nationally, there were 1.33 million claims during the same time period. The average cost to fix your vehicle after a deer collision is $4,341, up $162 over the year before.

Several of West Virginia's neighboring states are also considered ‘high-risk’ for deer collisions.
