A petition to keep an auto body repair program at a high school in Hanson Park, Ill., garnered more than 2,000 signatures.
April 15, 2019—A petition to keep the high school auto body program at Prosser Career Academy in Hanson Park, Ill., gathered more than 2,000 signatures, according to a report by the Chicago Tribune.
More than 40 community members gathered at a local school council meeting last Tuesday in the hope that officials would address the future of Prosser’s auto body repair program. Prosser principal Mark Schall began the meeting last week by clarifying that no shops are closing. All shops at the school are undergoing renovations as part of a $12 million renovation announced in September. Construction is set to begin May 8, he said at the meeting.
But, as he clarified, the program will be offered into the following school year, and Schall said the school’s career technical programs need to remain up-to-date and relevant in today’s job market, focusing on shops leading to union membership and employment — and auto body repair doesn’t fit that model, according to the report.
