April 24, 2017—Richard Altieri, Sr., a former auto body shop owner in the Amsterdam, N.Y., area, passed away on April 21, after a long illness. Altieri Sr. was an accomplished entrepreneur, who started Altieri’s Auto Body in east-central New York in 1955 and acquired the Sleepy Dutchman Restaurant-Motel in the mid 1970s, where he and much of his large family worked in concert until the early 1980s, when Altieri Sr. retired to Sun Center City, Fla.
Altieri Sr. was also a World War II veteran, serving as a member of a tank battalion in Europe until the war’s end in 1945. Not long after, he spent time working as an auto body technician at Caprara’s Auto Body of Schenectady, NY, according to a recordernews.com obituary. Altieri Sr. started Altieri’s Auto Body & Fender Works in 1955, and Anthony Altieri purchased the business in 1985 and the business carries on to this day.
