QCS Contesting NHTSA Report on Tesla Autopilot

QCS recently filed a freedom of information act lawsuit against the NHTSA regarding its findings about Tesla's Autopilot system.

Feb. 13, 2019—Quality Control Systems Corp. (QCS) recently filed a FOIA (freedom of information act) lawsuit against the NHTSA, asking for them to release all of their findings regarding Tesla's Autopilot system. Additionally, QCS contested a claim the safety organization made after it investigated a fatal crash involving Tesla Autopilot in 2017 without finding any defect or issuing any recall, reported Electrek.

In the final report, the federal agency also noted that Tesla’s crash rate was reduced by 40 percent after the Autopilot’s Autosteer feature was introduced based on their analysis of raw data supplied by Tesla.

Now the claim is being contested by QCS, which describes itself as a company providing “forensic statistical services and products." After analyzing the data, QSC says that NHTSA couldn't make the claim they did and in fact after that, the crash rate increased after Tesla introduced Autopilot.

Tesla disagreed with the analysis. Furthermore, the OEM made the point that it used only “about 1% of the total mileage that Tesla vehicles have traveled to date with Autopilot engaged.”
