Jan. 16, 2018—Hyundai and Cisco recently extensively explained their plans to produce a next-generation, hyperconnected car, and the OEM plans to feature the new on-vehicle network in its premium 2019 vehicles.

In 2016, Cisco and Hyundai initially reported plans to create a flexible and more secure platform that would build on smart-vehicle solutions. The new platform was then designed to be highly configurable, and offers the flexibility to design and build new services. It was designed to provide over-the-air updates, and the vehicle will also feature Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) architecture, offering features like multi-layer security.

Hyundai and Cisco’s partnership will also outfit vehicles with 1Gbps Ethernet, which will significantly increase in-vehicle bandwidth and offer high-speed connectivity to all devices in a car.

At last week’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Hyundai’s executive vice president, Seung-ho Hwang, said the manufacturer is poised to become an industry leader in in-vehicle technology.

“Hyundai Motor Group’s ongoing collaboration with top global technology companies is a testament to our ‘open innovation’ spirit,” Hwang said. “... In 2019 we will unveil the first vehicle equipped with groundbreaking connected-car technologies jointly developed” with the help of Cisco.
