June 5, 2018—Volkswagen’s core brand expects to best the company’s target of selling 1 million electric cars by 2025 a senior manager recently told the Reuters news service. The manager made the statement largely based on the solid current demand in China and Europe.
VW’s push into volume production of EVs comes as rival Tesla struggles to scale up manufacturing of its Model 3. A couple years ago, VW, Europe’s largest automaker, announced a plan to become a world leader in green transportation by producing 1 million EVs by 2025.
Efforts by China to tackle air pollution have helped trigger a surge of investment into the EV sector, cutting battery prices while raising the German brand’s optimism on the appeal of the technology.
“One could argue that we will well exceed the 1 million (target) from the MEB,” Christian Senger, head of electric mobility at the Volkswagen (VW) brand, told Reuters.
Senger added that latest signs that demand could top expectations come from national sales organizations such as Moeller Mobility Group in Scandinavia, which distribute VW vehicles across several markets.
