Oct. 12, 2011—Nissan Motor Co. on Wednesday announced its latest safety technologies to help reduce auto accidents and injuries.

Nissan released vehicle technology advances in three areas:

• Acceleration suppression for pedal misapplication: Nissan said it developed a function to recognize whether vehicles are on a road or in a parking lot by using image signal data acquired by the Around View Monitor's four unit cameras. The technology helps to mitigate collisions with obstacles, such as walls, due to a driver's misapplication of the accelerator instead of the brake, or pressing on the accelerator too hard.

The technology will be commercialized within the next two years, according to Nissan.

• Multi-Sensing System with Rear Camera: Using the Around View Monitor image processing technology, Nissan said it developed a Multi-Sensing System with Rear Camera. The system detects people, other vehicles and road conditions to alert drivers of possible collision risks. The system is equipped with blind spot warning, lane departure warning and moving object detection.

The technology will begin to be installed in 2012 model-year vehicles, according to Nissan.

• Predictive Forward Collision Warning System: To help prevent pileup accidents, a sensor installed in the front of a vehicle analyzes the relative velocity and the vehicular gap existing between two vehicles. When the system determines the need to decelerate, drivers are warned with a buzzer, a signal on display and tightening of the seat belt, according to Nissan.
