Virgin May Build Electric Vehicle to Compete with Tesla

March 24, 2015

March 24, 2015—Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group, recently hinted that he may use technology developed by Virgin Racing engineers to enter the consumer auto industry and take on Tesla Motors.

Branson recently spoke to Bloomberg where he said his racing company has “teams of people working on electric cars.

“So you never know—you may find Virgin competing with the Tesla in the car business as we do in the space business,” Branson said, according to Bloomberg TV. “We will see what happens.”

Virgin Racing Engineering is developing its new EV platform to compete in a new racing league called Formula E. The race, the world’s first international all-electric racing event, features battery-powered race cars capable of going from zero to 60 miles per hour in three seconds.

Branson said there are several white label automakers around the world that would handle the manufacturing for a Virgin EV.
