Oregon shops: State Farm is tops for accident care

Feb. 3, 2011

Feb. 3, 2011 — State Farm and two smaller Northwest-based auto insurers are the best at taking care of customers after an accident, according to a survey of Oregon collision repair shops.

Allstate, Geico, and Safeco were among the worst, according to the survey, which the Northwest Automotive Trades Association (NATA) sent to 600 shops throughout the state. The shops were asked to grade Oregon’s top 22 insurers on how each company’s “policies, attitude and payment practices ensure quality repairs and customer service for Oregon motorists.”

This is the fifth survey of its kind since 2004.

“Collision repair shops on a daily basis see how various insurance companies take care of Oregon drivers after an accident, so we feel it is worthwhile to ask how they rate the various insurers,” said Barbara Crest, executive director of NATA. “We believe their views will be helpful to insurance companies and consumers.”

State Farm, Oregon Mutual and Mutual of Enumclaw have consistently held the first three spots with a grade of B or better; State Farm and Oregon Mutual earned a B+ this year and Mutual of Enumclaw earned a B.

Some other highlights: Allstate received the lowest grade, a D+, while Geico and Safeco tied with a C-. Farmers Insurance, Esurance, Nationwide, Progressive, Liberty Mutual, Ameriprise and 21st Century each received a C. American Family received a C+ and Travelers earned a B-.

In most cases, shops with a DRP relationship with a particular company gave it higher grades.

“Collision repairers say the insurers receiving the highest grades—which includes both larger and smaller insurance companies—do the best job of taking care of Oregon drivers after an accident,” Crest said. “We hope consumers will take these ratings into account when choosing an auto insurer, and that insurers that received lower grades will work to improve their performance.”
