May 26, 2011 — Roughly 18 percent of U.S. drivers cannot meet the basic requirements to pass a drivers license, according to results release_notesd Thursday by GMAC Insurance.
The 2011 GMAC Insurance National Drivers Test results revealed that 36.9 million American drivers would not pass a written drivers test if they took it today. The results highlight the importance of drivers reviewing driving laws on a regular basis.
"All drivers need a refresher course when it comes to rules of the road and it begins with education," said Scott Eckman, chief marketing officer, GMAC Insurance. "We're hoping this year's GMAC Insurance National Drivers Test results will inspire drivers to arm themselves with the knowledge they need to stay safe."
A few key findings of GMAC's seventh annual driver survey:

Men scored better on the test than women with an average score of 80.2 percent for men and 74.1 percent for women.

Drivers in the Midwest scored the highest with an average score of 77.5 percent, while drivers in the Northeast scored the lowest with an average score of 74.9 percent.

Drivers age 60 to 65 score have the highest test scores with an average of 80.3 percent.

More than one in three drivers in New York and Washington, D.C. drivers failed the test, while only one in 20 drivers in Wyoming failed.
The survey included 5,130 licensed drivers age 16 to 65 in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. The test included 20 question from Department of Motor Vehicles exams.
